This is the holiday for forest fanatics!

East Gippsland hosts an annual Forests Forever Ecology Camp every Easter. Expert botanists and ecologists lead walks and tours around some of the best old growth and rainforests that the Errinundra Plateau and surrounds has to offer.

This camp has been held in East Gippsland since the local environment group formed in 1982. Environment East Gippsland has a membership of over 350 and this camp is our annual fund-raiser which helps us continue our work to protect the environment of the region.

The camps are held in a small farming settlement called Goongerah which is the base for walks and other activities. Goongerah is about 70 km north of Orbost and sits between the Errinundra and Snowy River National Parks. This little valley hugs the Brodribb River and the camp is based at a pleasant camp ground among the peppermints and manna gums complete with a neat eco-friendly composting toilet block. To cater for the 100 people who attend, the group provides facilities such as 12 volt solar power, a large marquee, information tent, firewood and organic fruit.

The tour leaders include people with many years experience in the forests of this region. A regular well-known personality is botanist - 'Sir' David Cameron. His boundless enthusiasm and knowledge of the plants and history of East Gippsland enthrals his audience; his specialty being rainforests. If you chose to take a walk with David, be ready for information overload. David also brings his famous rainforest slide show to explain every fascinating aspect of the living rainforest ecosystem. This solar powered show is presented under the marquee with Yellow-bellied gliders calling from the trees above.

Another guide is long-time resident and outspoken conservationist Jill Redwood. She coordinates Environment East Gippsland and is another raconteur of the walks. She will explain the environmental and European history of the region. As these forests have also provided the logging industry with wood for many decades, the results of forest management on the ecology and biodiversity of these areas are also explained.

A family friendly tree-therapy event not to be missed ~ make your booking early. The four days will cost $60 ($35 conc.) per person, or $20 a day. Teenagers half price, kids free.
